Job searching has a way of testing even the most confident professionals.
A role that feels perfect doesn’t materialise. An interview goes brilliantly, but another candidate is chosen. A process you’ve invested weeks in suddenly pauses, or a business changes direction altogether.
It’s easy to see these moments as setbacks. But in recruitment, we’ve learnt that they’re often something else entirely.
Time and again, we’ve watched candidates miss out on one opportunity, only to secure a role a few weeks later that proved to be a far better fit – for their skills, ambitions and long-term career. Looking back, many tell us they’re grateful the first role didn’t work out.
Marcus Aurelius wrote, “The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.” In other words, the obstacle isn’t something separate from the journey; it is part of the journey.
The recruitment process is rarely a straight line. A challenging interview might sharpen your answers for the next one. Constructive feedback may highlight strengths you hadn’t recognised or identify areas that become the difference in your future success. Even waiting can create space for an opportunity that simply wasn’t available before.
That’s not to say rejection is easy. It isn’t.
But one interview, one decision or one “no” rarely defines a career. What matters is how you respond – remaining curious, continuing to learn and trusting that each experience is building towards something bigger.

They happened because someone stayed resilient, kept the conversation going and remained open to the right opportunity rather than the next opportunity.
So if you’re navigating the job market and things aren’t moving as quickly as you’d hoped, don’t assume you’re standing still.
You may simply be on the part of the path that feels like an obstacle today – but makes perfect sense in hindsight.
